The children at Cook Literacy Model School in Winston-Salem met their new college student mentors for the first time one-on-one on Thursday. 

Three local universities in collaboration with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools received a $4.7 million grant from the U.S.

Winston-Salem State University joined a growing list of historically Black colleges and universities that have recently received a bomb threat, but a university spokeswoman says they were prepared.

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded more than $28 million in funding to Winston-Salem State University. It's the largest grant in the school's history.

Several Triad historically Black colleges and universities will be using federal funding to offer free textbooks to all undergraduate students in coming semesters.
