The North Carolina Healthy Youth Act of 2009 is still at the center of sex education curriculums across the state. The law lays out what middle and high school students should be learning in the classroom, but it has LGBTQ+ feeling left out of the conversation.

At the beginning of the school year, the Radio 101 class at R.J. Reynolds high school was tasked to look into the issue of teen mental health.

WFDD's Radio 101 has chosen to use only the first initial of the student in the following story due to the sensitive subject matter and to protect the students' privacy.
